Doka’s Preassembly Services Bring Efficiency and Precision to Wagner Pavilion in New York

11/11/2024 | Kenilworth, New Jersey
Doka’s advanced preassembly services played a pivotal role in the successful construction of the architecturally unique Wagner Pavilion in Battery Park City. As part of the South Battery Park City Resiliency Project, this 19,204-square-foot, two-story concrete structure required sophisticated engineering to achieve its intricate design, which features parabolic arches, curved walls, and complex geometries.

Offering stunning views of the park and harbor, the new pavilion serves as a welcoming retreat in Battery Park. It features a community room, restaurant, and public restrooms on the park level, storage at the Battery Place level, and a rooftop deck with expansive views of the Hudson River and the Statue of Liberty.

Doka collaborated closely with the design team and concrete contractor Darcon Construction Corp. to bring the architecturally challenging vision of Thomas Phifer and Partners to life. Doka’s preassembly services offered custom solutions that allowed for the precise and efficient installation of formwork, meeting the exacting standards necessary to accommodate the structure’s non-standard curves and archways.

Streamlined Solutions with Doka’s Preassembly Service
The Doka preassembly team worked in their Kenilworth, N.J. warehouse, leveraging advanced computer numerical control (CNC) technology to shape plywood and timber components to exacting measurements. This process included kerf bending and double-directional shaping, essential for achieving the tight radii and intricate details of the pavilion’s arches and walls. The preassembled formwork units were then delivered to the Wagner Pavilion site, where they were installed with minimal on-site adjustments, allowing the project to advance more rapidly and reducing labor.

“We rely heavily on Doka to design and preassemble all of the formwork as well as helping to precisely locate the systems at the site,” said Brian Duffy, Superintendent at Darcon Construction Corp. “I don’t think anyone else could do the job that Doka is doing here.”

Key Benefits of Doka’s Preassembly Services:
  • Precision and Quality: The preassembled formwork ensured an exact fit for the pavilion’s complex shapes, including non-standard curves, resulting in smooth installations and high-quality concrete finishes.
  • Time and Cost Savings: By delivering preassembled units ready for installation, Doka significantly reduced on-site assembly time, leading to lower rental periods, decreased crane usage, and reduced on-site material stockpiling.
  • Advanced Technology: The CNC-machined formwork not only achieved the required geometric complexity but also provided a seamless finish with no visible fasteners, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the structure.

Doka’s commitment to innovation and excellence in formwork design is evident in the Wagner Pavilion, demonstrating the effectiveness of preassembly services in handling complex, high-profile projects.
